Ok, I knew the 4th grade was going to be an adjustment for Abby, but I had no idea it would impact me so much. I know that Lake Castle promotes "responsibility" and "doing your own work". So as a parent you are to back off or ween yourself from your child and their schoolwork. BUT, is Lake Castle teaching them preparation and organization skills, not that I can tell. How can you expect a child to "plan ahead" for future tests and assignments without being told how to do so. I bought Abby a monthly planner where she can write what tests/assignments are coming up so Abby (and I) can study, read, and prepare.
They have never had to study, all about doing your homework and assignment is done. The thought of reviewing your notes and text nightly is unheard of.....but necessary.
Do they expect the child to fail then have an epiphany that "I need to start preparing better". Yeah right! These are 4th graders, not 8th graders. Heck in high school I did not have to plan ahead like this.
I am sorry but I am not going to let my child fail and suffer the consequences. As a parent it is my job to help her. Luckily Abby is smart and catches on quick but with the amount of teachers, homework, tests, etc. even the brightest kid can struggle. I will stop venting and will have to call her teacher to discuss my concerns.
I am just amazed with the fact Lake Castle seems on target with other things, but somehow showing the kids how to manage their day and responsibilities just did not come up. They should have provided tips to the kids (and parents) at beginning of the year in my opinion.
Then add in Abby's extracurricular activities: swimming team, soccer, CCD, Girl Scouts. As long as her grades are good we are willing to take her to and fro. Poor Maddie can't even take a tumbling or dancing as don't know when we could fit it in to our schedule.
